Budapest and the Surroundings

Budapest and the surroundings have rich historical traditions. To visit the famous historical towns of Esztergom and Visegrád in the Danube Bend you can choose a nice driving from the campsite in the Pilis- and Visegrádi Mountains or from Budapest a pleasant boat trip.

The Basilica of EsztergomEsztergom is one of the oldest cities in Hungary. Until 1249 it was the capital of the country.
Saint Stephen of Hungary was born here. In that time had been built the first church on the Castele-Hill dedicated to St. Adalbert. In the later centuries this building was destroyed. In 1822 Alexander Rudnay, the archbishop started building a big temple called Basilica, which is the main cathedral of the Hungarian Catholic Church. It is the biggest temple and the tallest building in the country.

Citadel (Fellegvár), VisegrádVisegrád is an ancient settlement. Around 1009 was built here a castle. The double fortification system was built around 1250-1260 for Béla IV.  The castle consisted of the fortified walls around the hilltop, two towers and a residential palace. The settlement lived its brightest period in reign of King Mátyás (1458-1490).
